How to show up in ChatGPT answers
There is no ranking position to win in ChatGPT, and nobody can guarantee a mention. What you can do is remove technical blockers, publish content that is easy to quote, and be present where the web talks about your brand.
How ChatGPT finds information
ChatGPT answers from two sources. First, what the model learned in training. Second, when search is used, pages retrieved from the web at the moment of the question, which are shown as linked sources. OpenAI documents separate crawlers for these jobs: OAI-SearchBot (finding pages to show in ChatGPT search), ChatGPT-User (fetching a page when a user asks for it) and GPTBot (collecting content that may be used to train models). Check OpenAI's current crawler documentation for details, because these can change.
Step 1: allow the right crawlers
If your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, your pages are less likely to be surfaced in ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot only affects training use. Many sites allow search crawlers and block training crawlers, and that is a legitimate choice. Test yours with the robots.txt and sitemap checker and read the full guide.
Step 2: make sure you are indexable on the open web
Search features rely on web indexes. Make sure your key pages return HTTP 200, are not marked noindex, have a canonical URL and are linked from your site. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. The SEO checker flags blockers.
Step 3: write pages that answer questions directly
- Put a short, direct answer under each question heading, then add detail.
- State facts plainly: who you serve, what you do, prices or ranges, locations or coverage, and how you differ.
- Add dates and named authors so readers and systems can judge freshness and expertise.
- Use the wording customers use. The question ideas tool shows real phrasing.
Step 4: build mentions beyond your site
Models and search tools lean on what other sources say about you. Earn accurate listings, reviews, partner pages, press and community discussion. Keep your name, description and links consistent everywhere.
Step 5: test with real prompts
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, with search on and off. Record whether you are named or linked, and which competitors and sources appear. Repeat monthly. Results vary, so judge trends over time.
What does not work
- Paying someone to "guarantee" ChatGPT rankings.
- Stuffing pages with prompts or hidden text.
- Mass-producing thin AI-written pages.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT rank websites?
No. It generates an answer and may link to sources. There is no published ranking list or position to track.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is an optional proposed convention. Major AI search providers have not confirmed that they use it, so treat it as low priority.
Will blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
Blocking GPTBot affects training use. Search inclusion is governed by OAI-SearchBot, according to OpenAI documentation. Verify against OpenAI current docs.
